A smile can only be beautiful when it is in harmony. While this begins with the shape of the teeth and how they fit the face, the way the teeth align with one another, the harmony between the jaws and the nose, and the lips and gums are all elements that contribute to this harmony.

Gum aesthetics (pink aesthetics) can be achieved through several different methods. The choice of these methods depends entirely on the type and extent of the correction required for each specific case. These interventions can sometimes involve removing excess gum tissue, while at other times they require adding gum tissue.

If a person’s gums show more than what is ideally expected when they smile, this condition is known as a “gummy smile.” A gummy smile can stem from various causes, such as teeth that have not fully erupted, the anatomical position of the jawbones, or the upper lip hyper-elevating (pulling up too high) during a smile. The underlying problem causing the gummy smile must be accurately diagnosed, and the treatment must be tailored accordingly. It is important to note that not every case can be treated simply by trimming the gums and moving the gumline upward.

While it is possible to achieve the desired result in simple cases by contouring the gum tissue to its ideal shape, more advanced cases require the removal of a certain amount of the underlying bone as well. In cases where bone removal is necessary but not correctly diagnosed beforehand meaning only the gums are reshaped the gum tissue will revert to its original position within a short period of time.

Hypermobile Lip Operation

The appearance of the gums is directly related to the movement, tone, and thickness of the lips. In some individuals, when they smile broadly, the lip muscle pulls up too high, revealing an excessive amount of gum tissue.
In such cases, a gum specialist (periodontist) reduces the depth of the space between the inner part of the lip and the gum (the vestibule or sulcus) to restrict the lip from rising too high. This procedure is known as the ‘Hypermobile Lip Operation’ (also commonly referred to as Lip Repositioning Surgery).

Perhaps the most important yet often overlooked aspect of cosmetic dentistry is gum aesthetics.
